Missouri subpoenaed Facebook in an investigation of the company’s business practices for sharing and tracking user data, Attorney General Josh Hawley (R) announced Monday (see 1803280045). Hawley was one of 37 state AGs who wrote to Facebook last week asking for details about the Cambridge Analytica controversy. “There is no excuse for this irresponsible handling of user data,” Hawley said. “Missourians need to know that they can trust the companies and platforms that have access to as much user information as Facebook does.” A coalition of privacy, civil liberties and human rights organizations launched a campaign Monday saying tech companies should reform data collection and sharing practices. The American Civil Liberties Union, Demand Progress and Fight for the Future were among those urging platforms like Facebook, Google and Twitter to limit data collection, give users more data control, offer encryption protection and support policy reforms to limit government access to user data, among other reforms. At Facebook, "we look forward to responding to Attorney General Hawley’s questions when we receive the details of his request," said Will Castleberry, vice president-state and local public policy, in a statement.

Samsung was within its bounds to advertise its QLED TVs as rendering “100% color volume” but the set maker should disclose for “context” in a “consumer-meaningful manner” that the claim “references the color volume displayed by the content," said the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus Tuesday. Samsung agreed to run the disclosures, said NAD, acting on a challenge from Samsung rival LG. It also agreed to discontinue other claims it made about the QLED TVs in print and online ads that the sets have “infinite array” technology, that they bring “all shades of color” to life and that the sets’ color “stays true from any perspective, so every seat is a great seat," said NAD. In investigating LG’s challenge, NAD “considered whether the advertising implied that the picture quality of the QLED TV is superior to all other televisions on the market.” it said. “The claims at issue in LG's challenge relate to the QLED's picture quality, lighting technology, and color performance capabilities,” said NAD. LG declined comment on the finding. Samsung representatives didn’t respond to requests for a statement.

The Advertising Self-Regulatory Council upheld a consumer complaint that e-commerce provider Liftopia lacked upfront notice of interest-based advertising. The platform for ski resort ticket sales didn't alert consumers that third-party advertisers potentially collect data about browser activity and use that data to deliver ads to users on other websites, it said Wednesday. The ASRC, which is directed by the Council of Better Business Bureaus, establishes policies for industry self-regulation. The ASRC notice said, to address the problem, Liftopia “added an enhanced notice link to the footer of its website.” Liftopia didn't comment.
