Timothy Warren is Executive Managing Editor of Communications Daily. CBP will open registration for the 2012 East Coast Trade Symposium at 1 p.m. Aug. 29, it said. The symposium is scheduled for October 29-30 and will be at the Renaissance DC Downtown Hotel in Washington, D.C. The theme for the Trade Symposium is "Expanding 21st Century Global Partnerships." Customs Rulings Online Search System (CROSS) was updated Aug. 23 with 346 rulings, bringing the total number of searchable rulings to 173,742. The most recent ruling is dated 8/21/2012.

CBP posted an Aug. 27 version of its CF 1400 (Record of Vessel in Foreign Trade Entrances) electronic query report of the Vessel Management System (VMS), in accordance with 19 CFR 4.95, organized by entrances. CBP also posted a version of its CF 1401 (Record of Vessel in Foreign Trade Clearances) electronic query report of the VMS, in accordance with 19 CFR 4.95, organized by clearances.
Several ports in the Gulf Coast area have been shut down as a result of a Tropical Storm in the region. The following ports have been fully or partially closed closed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Alerts on ports affected by the storm are available (here).
CBP South Florida National Targeting and Analysis Group and CBP Southwest Regional Science Center’s mobile laboratory unit teamed up with officials at the Port of Laredo to target suspect shipments of steel pipe and tubing for examination, conduct field tests, and collect samples for further analysis, the agency said in a press release. Such imports are being sold in the United States at artificially low prices that threaten domestic industry’s ability to sell locally produced steel pipe and tubing at a competitive price, it said.
CBP's ACEopedia for August 2012 describes a "New ACE Development Strategy." The new "Agile-like" strategy allows for the additions of smaller functionalities to ACE and has been used in deploying Simplified Entry (SE), the Document Image System (DIS) and Participating Government Agency (PGA) Interoperability, said CBP. The new strategy was the biggest change between the new ACEopedia and previous versions. The new ACEopedia doesn't mention the departure of Cindy Allen, the current head of the ACE Business Office.
CBP will test giving new authority to directors of the established Centers for Excellence and Expertise (CEEs), it said in a Federal Register notice Aug. 28. The pilot program will allow the CEE directors to have similar authority as port directors as a step towards achieve uniformity in the treatment at ports of entry for certain industries.
CBP posted an updated version of its notice announcing that the next customs broker license exam will be on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
