The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced a toll-free number to report high-risk cattle in the U.S. According to APHIS, the toll-free number for the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance program is 1(866) 536-7593. APHIS explains that as part of its expanded BSE surveillance effort, it will work closely with cattle producers, renderers, veterinarians, and others to obtain samples from high-risk cattle targeted in this program. APHIS states that toll-free callers reporting high-risk cattle will connect with a local APHIS office that will provide additional information. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a notice announcing that it will hold a public meeting on June 29, 2004 in College Park, MD to elicit information from stakeholders concerning key elements of the draft version of FDA's new produce safety action plan entitled, Produce Safety from Production to Consumption: An Action Plan to Minimize Foodborne Illness Associated with Fresh Produce.
In the June 16, 2004 issue of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Bulletin (CBPBulletin) (Vol. 38, No. 25), CBP issued notices: (a) proposing to revoke treatment regarding Durapore filtering material on rolls, and (b) proposing to revoke three classification rulings regarding moisture meters. CBP states that it is also proposing to revoke any treatment it has previously accorded to substantially identical transactions that are contrary to its position in these notices.
On May 27, 2004, the U.S. and Bahrain completed a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) under which the U.S. and Bahrain will provide immediate duty-free access on virtually all of the products in their tariff schedules and will phase out tariffs on the remaining handful of products within 10 years.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a final rule, effective July 6, 2004, which amends 21 CFR Parts 1, 10, and 16 to provide procedures for the administrative detention of an article of food, if an officer or qualified employee of the FDA has credible evidence or information indicating that such article presents a threat of serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals.

U.S., the Court of International Trade (CIT) ruled in favor of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that certain Certs Powerful Mints are properly classified under HTS 2106.90.99 (6.4%), which provides for food preparations not elsewhere specified or included.
