Simaudio’s Moon products are now compatible with Apple AirPlay 2 via an integrated streaming module, said the company Monday. Apple users can play music from any iOS device and change music with Siri voice control, it said. AirPlay 2 also adds multiroom playback. Moon products with AirPlay 2 are the Ace all-in-one music system; MiND 2 network player; 280D, 680D and 780D v2 streaming digital-to-analog converters; and the 390 network player/preamplifier, the company said.
The Wireless Speaker and Audio Association (WiSA) announced its first branded product, a home cinema transmitter that enables multichannel audio without the need for an AV receiver or Wi-Fi. The $179 SoundSend can be bundled or co-promoted with powered speakers or TVs, said the association Monday. The wireless transmitter allows consumers to create surround sound through a simple connection to a smart TV, a “massive market for SoundSend,” said WiSA President Tony Ostrom. WiSA partner Platin Audio will be the first association member to sell SoundSend through its Tuned by THX Monaco 5.1 audio system. The transmitter will be available through Amazon, Newegg and other retailers in early December. It transmits 24-bit/96 kHz audio for up to eight channels and decodes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos, WiSA said.
TCL introduced the Moveaudio S150 true wireless earbuds, available on Amazon for $40. Sound United said Tuesday that speakers in its Definitive Technology and Polk Audio lines have been Imax-Enhanced-certified. Definitive’s Demand D17, D15 and D5c and the Polk Audio Legend L800, L600 and L400 speakers are the first home theater speakers to receive the Imax certification, the company emailed. Sound United’s intent in joining the certification program was “to reproduce the signature IMAX sound without compromise,” said Matt Lyons, Polk vice president-engineering. “IMAX defined a specific set of frequency ranges to be used for testing, which we then ultimately measured against speaker performance.” The company’s Denon and Marantz brands previously received Imax Enhanced certification for select AV receivers. Imax and DTS worked with Hollywood sound mixers and consulted with industry experts, including engineering teams at Polk Audio and Definitive Technology, to design the loudspeaker certification process, Sound United said. The speaker certification "completes the ecosystem of IMAX Enhanced products including content, devices and loudspeakers, all calibrated to offer the level of performance IMAX demands,” Lyons said. The company didn’t say whether speakers from Bowers & Wilkins, which Sound United acquired last month (see 2010160060), would be submitted for Imax Enhanced certification.
Sonarworks integrated its SoundID technology into Monolith by Monoprice true wireless earphones, it emailed Friday. The SoundID app lets users create individual sound profiles using algorithms and machine learning designed to evolve with a listener over time. A test via the app allows users to identify their SoundID, based on hearing ability and listening preferences, to create a personalized listening experience, said Sonarworks. The M-TWE earphones ($129) have 10-hour playback time. SoundID is expected to be available on mobile devices, across streaming and music database platforms, and on speakers in the future, said the company.
Skullcandy updated its headphone line, announcing Monday it added active noise cancellation to its Indy true wireless earbuds and Hesh headphones. Indy ANC earbuds ($129) have 19 hours of battery life with ANC on, offer lag-free connection and are sweat- and water-resistant, said the company. Hesh ANC over-ear headphones ($129) have an ambient mode that deactivates noise canceling, 22 hours of battery life with ANC on and rapid charge, giving three hours of battery life with a 10-minute charge. Both, with built-in Tile tracking, will be available Sunday.
The Dolby.IO interactivity platform is a “game changer” that expands the company’s addressable market and creates a recurring revenue-based business, Colliers's Steven Frankel wrote investors Monday. The platform was updated last week to include Dolby Voice, which boosts the user experience, especially in group calls, the analyst noted. He linked to a demo of interactive application programming interfaces showing participants on a group video call talking -- and being heard -- simultaneously, a top complaint of half-duplex audio used in videoconferencing today. The technology, with spatial audio and noise suppression, is said to reduce background noise and echo commonly heard on group calls. Early adopters of Dolby.IO have used it for podcasting, telemedicine applications and collaboration apps. Frankel believes incorporating Voice into Dolby.IO will better position the company to find partners in the united-communications-as-a-service space, “a likely key to scaling the [Dolby.IO] business.”
