CEO Gerald Quindlen touted the benefits of open ecosystems in general, specifically Google’s Android operating system, which he said offered long-term growth potential similar to Microsoft’s Windows.

A rare en banc review of an appeals court decision that could force EchoStar to shut down millions of set-top boxes renewed arguments over to what extent EchoStar had violated a TiVo patent and a court injunction. The oral argument Tuesday before nine judges in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit raised questions on the standard for a contempt ruling against EchoStar for continued infringement of TiVo’s DVR patent.
Hhgregg’s fiscal Q2 net income dropped $1 million year-over-year to $3.9 million, CEO Dennis May said on its earnings webcast Tuesday. CFO Jeremy Aguilar said the double-digit “peak to trough” change in the business from July through September, led by drops in appliance and video sales, was “as dramatic as I've seen in 35 years.” The company is “seeing stabilization” now, he said. May said he didn’t want to give the impression that “comps fell off the table. … It was just a dramatic swing from things going along pretty robust to not so robust at all.” Comparable store sales dipped 1.5 percent for the quarter, the company said. A decline in vendor support along with increased selling promotions to drive market share reduced margins in video, he said.
Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) boosted 2015 sales forecasts for active matrix OLED displays (AMOLED)in handheld devices to 700 million units, from a 600 million prediction just three months ago, citing growing demand for the technology, Universal Display executives said in a conference call. Universal supplies red phosphorescent OLED material to SMD. Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone, which contains a 4-inch OLED with 800x480 resolution, has sold 5 million units since June, while Verizon launched sales of HTC’s Droid Incredible with a an 3.7-inch panel, Universal executives said.
Larry Weber, inducted into the CEA Hall of Fame last month for contributions to plasma display panel technology and its commercialization, has set his sights on the next major breakthrough for the 50-year-old technology. Weber told Consumer Electronics Daily he’s working in his garage lab in upstate New York to reduce the power use for plasma displays by as much as 20 to 40 times.
Dish Network remains uncertain of how it will use its large holdings of 700 MHz spectrum, Dish CEO Charlie Ergen said Friday during the company’s Q3 conference call. Dish paid about $712 million for 168 E-block spectrum licenses in 2008, covering most of the U.S.
SAN ANTONIO -- Despite falling short of sales targets this year, sales of 3D TVs will recover to 5 to 6 million units in 2011 as manufacturers shift to marketing the technology as a feature and not the main reason for buying the set, LG Electronics executives said at the company’s dealer show. Sales of 3D TVs will hit 1.7 million units this year, below forecasts of as many as 4 million units, the executives said.
With Dolby’s licensing revenue from CE products in decline and projections for PC shipments lowered, executives said in their fiscal Q4 2010 earnings webcast last week that the company will focus on “new geographies,” online content, smartphones and mobile entertainment devices for long-term growth. For the fiscal year, Dolby reported total revenue of $922.7 million, compared with $719.5 million the previous year. Fiscal year net income was $283.4 million, compared with $243 million.
The California Energy Commission’s pursuit of energy efficiency standards is “unnecessary and wasteful” given that the U.S. Department of Energy is already working on national energy conservation standards for the devices, CEA and several other trade groups said. The groups urged the commission to reject a report from Pacific Gas & Electric and Ecos Consulting that it’s using as a basis for developing battery charger standards because the California utility and the consulting firm have “vested interests” in regulating the devices.
