US to Propose Curbs on Chinese Connected Vehicle Parts, Software Next Month, Official Says
The Bureau of Industry and Security plans to release a rule next month to propose new restrictions on certain Chinese connected vehicle imports, including certain software, sensors and cameras used in those cars, said Alan Estevez, BIS undersecretary. The rule, which would build on an advance notice of proposed rulemaking released by the agency in February (see 2402290034), is expected “sometime in August,” Estevez said during an event this week hosted by the Aspen Institute.
Although Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in June said the rule could ban Chinese connected vehicle imports “in the most extreme case,” (see 2406260048), Estevez said the rule will propose narrower restrictions. He said the agency is “looking at a few components and some software, not the whole car.” Restrictions could target “some of the key driver components of the vehicle that manage the software and manage the data around that car.” Those products “would have to be made in an allied country,” he said.
