Recent Customs Violation Settlement Followed 'Compliance Measurement Hit'
The $3.3 million offer in compromise that settled civil liability for customs violations with CBP came about due to the work of an agency import specialist, a CBP spokesperson said. Satisloh, which imports machinery that is used in making optical lenses, made the offer in compromise (see 1911200042) after CBP said it “provided false descriptions, tariff classification numbers, and/or duty rates to CBP for the entries of certain machinery and repair parts.”
CBP didn't answer questions about the number of entries involved or the time frame, but it did provide some more detail. “Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of detail we can go into, however, we can say that one of CBP’s Import Specialist (I.S.) reviewed the entry based on a compliance measurement hit, and then cross-reference entry with CBP's rulings system (CROSS) to determine proper classification for the subject goods,” the spokesperson said. “The I.S. was then able to pull all entries associated with this company, back through the issuance of the ruling. As an extensive number of entries were impacted, the I.S. coordinated across numerous ports of entry to assess the extent of the violation and gather facts to support the case.”
