Commerce's Extension of Huawei TGL Will Have Little Impact, Huawei Says
The Commerce Department’s decision to renew the temporary general license for Huawei “won't have a substantial impact on Huawei's business either way,” the company said in a Nov. 19 statement. Huawei said the 90-day reprieve (see 1911180036), which authorizes a narrow set of transactions with the U.S. despite Huawei’s placement on the Entity List, “does not change the fact that Huawei continues to be treated unfairly.”
The move has done “significant economic harm” to U.S. companies, Huawei said, and has damaged trust and collaboration in global supply chains. “We have long held that the decision by the US Department of Commerce to add Huawei to the Entity List has caused more harm to the US than to Huawei,” the company said. “We call on the US government to put an end to this unjust treatment and remove Huawei from the Entity List.”
China’s Foreign Ministry called on the U.S. to “stop abusing the national security concept” and its export controls, which it said are being used to “discriminate,” against foreign companies, a spokesman said Nov. 19. The spokesman declined to say whether Chinese officials asked for relief for Huawei in trade negotiations with the U.S. “I can tell you clearly that we ask no favors for Chinese businesses, but only equal treatment for them, Huawei included,” the spokesperson said.
