Trump to Meet Xi at G-20; Negotiations Will Resume First

Trade negotiations will resume with China ahead of a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, Trump tweeted June 18. He said he and Xi "will be having an extended meeting next week at the G-20 in Japan." The White House said the two leaders talked on that morning about "structural barriers to trade with China and achieving meaningful reforms that are enforceable and verifiable."

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Trump is right to confront China decisively. "I urge him and President Xi to reach a deal that results in structural changes to China’s discriminatory policies and practices," he said during a conference call with reporters June 18. "When that’s all done we can eliminate these tariffs he’s put on." Grassley said tariffs should not be a long-term policy.
