Canadian Government Notices as of April 19
The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notices as of April 19 (note that some may also be given separate headlines):
- CBSA concludes expiry review for copper tube. The Canada Border Services Agency on April 18 reached its conclusion in a five-year review regarding the continuation or resumption of dumping of copper tube from Brazil, China, Greece, Mexico and South Korea, and the subsidization of the goods from China. It will issue of Statement of Reasons by May 3, 2019. As a result of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal's initiation of a five-year expiry review, on Nov. 20, 2018, concerning the dumping of certain copper tube originating in or exported from Brazil, China, Greece, Mexico and South Korea, and the subsidizing of those goods originating in or exported from China, CBSA on Nov. 21, 2018, initiated an expiry review investigation to determine whether the expiration of the findings is likely to result in the continuation or resumption of dumping and/or subsidizing of the subject goods. CITT will make a determination on injury to the domestic market by Sept. 25, 2019.
- Canada’s international merchandise trade for February. Statistics Canada reported April 17 that Canada's imports declined 1.6% (less gold imported) while exports were down 1.3% (led by non-energy products) in February. Canada's merchandise trade deficit with the world narrowed slightly, from $3.1 billion in January to $2.9 billion in February. It also said: "Owing to a $1.2 billion upward revision to crude oil exports for the January reference month, the trade deficit, originally published as $4.2 billion last month, was adjusted to $3.1 billion in the current month's release."
- NAFTA textile/apparel TPL utilization. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade updated the 2018 NAFTA textile and apparel tariff preference level utilization rate for imports and exports.
- Product Recalls: HAAKAN Table Lamp manufactured in China recalled, for fire and burn hazards; Callum-Platform and Storage Canopy beds manufactured in Vietnam recalled, for injury hazard; Fisher & Paykel Appliances 30-inch freestanding gas ranges manufactured in Italy recalled, for fire hazard.
