Canadian Government Notices as of Jan. 5

The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notice as of Jan. 5 (some may also be given separate headlines):

CITT decision on centrifugal opening knives. The Canadian International Trade Tribunal issued an opinion in an appeal of a Canada Border Services Agency ruling. Following the CITT decision in Appeal No. AP-2017-012, the CBSA will immediately prohibit the importation of all knives that open automatically by centrifugal force (centrifugal knives).
Statement on final U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland issued a statement regarding the United States' Jan. 3 final decision on countervailing and antidumping duties on imports of certain Canadian softwood lumber products, indicating “U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber are unfair, unwarranted and troubling. They are harmful to Canada’s lumber producers, workers and communities, and they add to the cost of home building, renovations and other projects for American middle-class families.” She added that Canada has started working on legal challenges under NAFTA and through the World Trade Organization.
Customs Privileges for Diplomatic Missions, Consular Posts and Accredited International Organizations. The Canada Border Services Agency has issued an update to Memorandum D21-1-1, which outlines and explains the customs privileges and exemptions granted to foreign representatives posted to Canada and assigned to diplomatic missions, consular posts, and certain international organizations accredited by the Global Affairs Canada. The update reflects the department name change from “Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD)” to “Global Affairs Canada (GAC)” and provides updated phone numbers for GAC in paragraph 13.
Product Recalls: HP Inc. Canada recalls lithium-ion batteries in Notebook computers and mobile workstations manufactured in China, for fire and burn hazards; MTD Products Company recalls SureFit blade spindle shaft and assembly manufactured in China, for injury hazard; Woolino recalls Woolino footed pajamas manufactured in China, for flammability hazard.
