Canadian Government Notices as of Oct. 18

The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notices as of Oct. 18 (some may also be given separate headlines):

• International transactions in securities for August 2017. Statistics Canada reports foreign investment in Canadian securities totaled $9.8 billion in August, down from $24 billion in July. At the same time, Canadian investors increased their holdings of foreign securities by $12 billion, led by purchases of U.S. corporate instruments.
• Payment of duties and taxes on imported commercial goods. The Canada Border Services Agency has issued Customs Notice 17-33 advising customs brokers and importers that the agency has a new D-Memorandum on payment of duties and taxes on imported commercial goods, introducing new payment policies related to payments of statement of account. Some of the new policies were introduced starting on Feb. 25, 2017; the remaining ones will be introduced starting Jan. 24, 2018.
• CITT determination on polyethylene terephthalate resin. The Canadian International Trade Tribunal has determined there is a reasonable indication that the dumping and subsidizing of polyethylene terephthalate resin from China, India, Oman and Pakistan have caused injury to the domestic industry.
• Product Recalls: Rubies Costume Co. (Canada) recalls Secret Wishes “Kissable Kitty” costume manufactured in China, for burn hazard; Herman Miller recalls Eames Molded Fiberglass Rocking Chairs manufactured in the U.S., for fall hazard.
